Katie Sawyer
Katie first began her relationship with yoga in 1998, when her studying for a B.A. in Comparative Religions and Peace and Conflict Studies took her to Chennai, India. There she spent 3 1/2 months studying Hatha Yoga at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, whose founder, Krishnamacharya, is considered the father of modern yoga.
Over the next few years Katie began to integrate her yoga practice into her daily life. Soon after, Katie found Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and has been a daily, dedicated practitioner ever since.
Her passion for Ashtanga Yoga has taken her to Mysore, India, on three occasions where she has spent over 7 months studying with the guru of Ashtanga Yoga, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and his grandson, Sharath Rangaswamy.
She has also studied with numerous senior teachers such as Richard Freeman (with whom she has completed both regular and advanced Teacher Intensives), Tim Miller, John Scott, David Swenson, and Rolf Naujokat. Katie's teaching reflects interest in facilitating awareness through alignment and breath while staying grounded in the system of Ashtanga. Katie has taught in internationally in such places as Spain, Morocco, Japan and Canada. She remains first and foremost a student of yoga and spends several months every year with one or more of her teachers. She and her family have settled in Nelson, BC.
